Further Thoughts On Eco's Open Work

In our second seminar we were approached with the following questions, to which I gave the shown answers. Further to this we were asked to present our overview of the text and a set of keywords that we felt appropriate in relation to the text.

What are your thoughts about the open work?

It is unique yet can be based upon past creations.
It is a combination of not just the reader’s background but also that of the creator’s.
Limitless interpretations even with limitations.

In what way do you think that open works are poetic?

They can be a finite piece yet still are very much open. Finished but unfinished.

How would you contextualize the open work to your own practice?

Although a graphic piece has carefully considered symbolism and structure, it can still have a different meaning to a portion of the audience through their experience and knowledge.

Keywords – to help inform my position around the text

Composition, perspective cultural, contextualise, finite, symbolism, interpretation, performers, consumer.

As well as that previously mentioned on my blog, there is further analysis and thoughts from myself on the topic in conversation with my peers, which is held in forum form with public access to view on the Internet.

Throughout this seminar I found listening to and sharing viewpoints with my peers to be interesting, this is because everyone looks at/reads something from a different perspective and so takes something different out of it.
