Within this seminar we touched on a few topics, including
the framing around our theory module content, the new studio practise brief
“Collide” and about the idea of transdisciplinarity
within design and that of the curated space. We were introduced to the
topics through briefly talking about Alex Coles’s books, “The Transdisciplinarily Studio” and “EP Vol. 1 The
Italian Avant-Garde: 1968–1976”. These books cover the crossover of disciplines
within art and design, how this may progress and the ever-increasing practice
of such. While they touch upon future possibilities around inter-disciplines, the
EP Vol.1 in particular, primarily looks back on previous examples.
The key discussion to take away from today’s seminar is around the idea
of language and how language can be turned into objects. In talking about
objects this doesn’t necessarily mean the conventional sense of sculpture or
installation, as was pointed out, paper and books are objects so the
possibilities are a lot more open then maybe first thought. However when we
talk about language, it is important to remember that we are not solely talking
about the written word but also visual language, as this too can present a
story and is the discipline in which I am involved.
