The way the Hansen uses her body/being as the tool for which she creates the marks, with the addition of charcoal, reminds me of another artists piece. It reminds me of Marina Abramović's performance of "The Artist Is Present", in which she used her own presence in conjunction with that of the audience as a way to exhibit a conceptual artwork. Though within this performance her ex-lover made a surprise appearance, to which the unspoken but clearly displayed deep emotions were expressed through stirred facial reaction and expression.
Though the ownership of the piece is disputed between the two, due to their past shared artistic performances sharing aspects of the piece. Coming back to the point of the relation between these two pieces, I find these interesting from a theoretical point of view. What interests me about these pieces or performances is the intention to capture or at least for that moment take an interest in being, such as the practice of mindfulness. In regards to the piece by Hansen, she uses the seemingly natural movements from her body to begin the mark-making. As further videos of her work demonstrates this slowly progresses into a more thought through pattern, though still stemming from this natural almost subconscious flow of the body. This further reminds me of yet another practice, the art of automatic drawing as used by the surrealists. It makes me consider how using this technique in combination of whole body movements, or perhaps partial body movements, could create surreal and unusual patterns which could be manipulated into fantastical scenes.
