The below embedded post is from Anne Stokes as she talks about her work "Magic Mirror". When considering which works of art and design to include within my essay as the focal point, I came across this piece which intrigued me. I find Stokes sums up my thoughts well here in regards to the piece, while also in a way answering my question of its meaning. That meaning being that there isn't necessarily a solid answer but rather every interpretation is neither wrong nor right but just that, an individual's interpretation. With pieces such as these and as Stokes mentions they build up a story and it is this, which I adore and find to engage my imagination. It is this in combination with the visual display of visceral emotions, which intrigue me in relation to art and design.
One element which is worth noting is the use of symbols as a device, here it is mentioned how parts of the image such as the cobwebs are used as a symbol. This is done in a way as to give clues to the viewer of what the story may be. Further to this the artist mentions that there is no right or wrong way to interpret the piece and this as a closing point, draws back to the idea of the Open Works by Umberto Eco.
